On our return to home, the fires were already beginning. They had already been raging in California, there were fires in Idaho and they were just beginning in Oregon. As we drove across the Eastern part of the state and into Idaho, the sky was a dirty, hazy color of smoke that hung low like a smothering blanket all the way into Wyoming.

We intended to do some exploring at Craters On the Moon in Idaho, but since we forgot that we would be losing an hour on our way back home we didn’t arrive until sunset. The smoke and the low light made this eerie volcanic debris even more eerie.
The Grand Tetons looked quite different then they did on our way out because of all the smoke.
We made a last minute decision to drive through Yellowstone National Park and stopped at West Thumb Lake to see some of the bubbling turquoise cauldrons.
We exited the West via the Big Horn Mountains. So many places to see! We need more time to explore so we will have to return another day.
